Hello Parents, my name is Nicki and I am an experienced teacher of more than 20 years’ with specialization in Barriers to Learning. I provide remedial lessons to struggling learners in the primary school phase. My Bachelor of Arts degree, Higher Diploma of Education and Advanced Certificate In Education: Barriers to Learning in Learning Difficulties has provided me with the background and scope to successfully teach and provide intervention to struggling learners. I see the struggles that they go through and know that I can help them with their phonemic awareness skills to enable them to read and perform in the classroom. I have taught from grade 1 level to grade 10 level in mainstream education and I currently provide remedial lessons from grade 1 level to grade 7 level. Phononlogical awareness is critical for learning to read any alphabetical writing system. (Ehri, 2004; Rath, 2001; Troia, 2004) I start at the beginning and lay the foundation with phonological awareness skills to work progressively in a systematic manner at the child’s pace to promote a love of reading and to grow and develop their self-esteem with confidence. It is always such a special moment when their face lights up with delight because they can now read.
